Although we may believe that this is the lady-like elegant way to sit, sitting this way cuts down circulation to your legs. If you don't want varicose veins to mar the beauty of your legs and compromise your health, uncross your legs every time you realise you have one knee on top of the other. The best way to sit is to simply place both legs together on the floor, balancing your weight equally. If you feel like changing position, instead of crossing your legs, simply move both legs together to one side. As an alternative, you could also consider crossing your legs loosely at the ankles. This is a classically elegant way to sit, and is far better for your legs and your health than sitting with your legs crossed at your knees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Not changing our toothbrush&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How often do you change your toothbrush? Most of us wait until most of the bristles have either fallen off, or are in such bad shape that we'd be embarrassed to pull out our brush in public. However, since not many of us need to pull out our brush in public, we carry on with our frayed one until we lose it. Replace your toothbrush often. Damaged bristles can harm the enamel, and don't massage your gums well. If you find brushing your teeth a pain like I do, but know you must do it, you might as well be doing it right. Imagine going through the annoyance of brushing your teeth twice a day only to find out that you're damaging your enamel every time you clean your teeth. Also, use a brush with soft bristles unless your dentist has advised otherwise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Eating out often&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are oils that are high in cholesterol, and oils that cause little harm and are better for your heart. However, no matter how light the oil is, it is never a good idea to eat too much of it. Avoid fried foods.Remember that in all probability your favorite Indian food restaurant throws a huge, HUGE chunk of butter in a tiny bowl of dal. Rita, who worked in the kitchen of a 5 star hotel, was shocked when she saw the cook chop a 500gm butter slab in half, and throw half into a Paneer Makhani dish. No wonder the customers left licking their fingers. And no wonder they felt so stuffed and heavy afterwards. Remember, when you wake up in the morning it's been around 10-12 hours since your last meal. Your body needs food now, more than at any other time. Eat a heavy breakfast. You will then be busy through the day, and the calories will get expended quickly. If you are trying to diet, eat a light dinner. Here are some more common health mistakes we make. Being informed and making a few changes can help make us feel a whole lot better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;High heels&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;High heels sure look great, but they're murder for your back. This however doesn't mean you should steer clear of stilettos. Wear them, but not when you know you will be walking around a lot. Wear them when going out for lunch or dinner - when the only walking you will be doing is to your car, to the table, and back. Avoid high heels when you are going somewhere on foot. If you are constantly tempted to wear your heels, take a good look at your flats. Is there something about them you dislike? Invest in a new pair of beautiful flats or shoes with a low heel. Buy something you love, that you will enjoy wearing. If possible, get a matching bag. You will then enjoy your flats as much as you do your heels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Sleeping on a soft bed&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You don't have to sleep on the floor to be kind to your back, but do make sure you have a firm mattress. Although a mattress on springs is soft and lovely to sink into, it's bad for your back. If you already have an old bed with springs, you don't need to invest in a new one - simply get a thick wooden plank put over the springs, and place the mattress on the plank. Similarly, if your mattress is old and lumpy, throw it out and get a new one. Your neck and your back will thank you. The same rule applies to sofas. If you will be spending hours on a sofa, get a firm yet comfortable one. Sofas you completely sink into are not the best idea..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Pillows &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No matter how comfortable sleeping with ten cushions is, have pity on your neck and resist. Sleep with one pillow, and make sure it is not too thick. If your pillow gets lumpy, discard it and go for a new one. Get a thin pillow if you sleep on your stomach, and something a little thicker if you sleep on your back, to give your neck adequate support.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Not exercising&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So all of us know we should exercise more, but many of us don't. This is a health mistake we consciously make! And why is that? Simply because we refuse to admit the damage we are causing to our bodies by not working out. A number of people only start working out once they've experienced a warning signal. Don't wait for a heart attack to strike before you decide to opt for a lifestyle change. Make the change now. You don't need to train for the marathon to be in top shape. Half an hour of brisk walking three to four times a week will make a world of difference to your health. You could then increase this to forty minutes, four times a week - and you're all set. It's just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that's different, odd, or unexplainable. (You should also listen to those close to you, such as a wife or partner, because others sometimes notice things we're unaware of—or don't want to admit.) You don't want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they'd noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here, some signs of cancer that are commonly overlooked:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;1&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;/strong&gt; Upset stomach or stomachacheOne of the first signs colon cancer patients remember experiencing when they look back is unexplained stomach aches. Those with pancreatic cancer describe a dull ache that feels like it's pressing inward. Many liver cancer patients say they went in complaining of stomach cramps and upset stomachs so frequently that their doctors thought they had ulcers. Liver cancer patients and those with leukemia can experience abdominal pain resulting from an enlarged spleen, which may feel like an ache on the lower left side.&lt;br /&gt;If you have a stomachache that you can't attribute to a digestive problem or that doesn't go away, ask your doctor to order an ultrasound. Finding a liver or pancreatic tumor early can make all the difference in treatment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. Chronic "acid stomach" or feeling full after a small mealThe most common early sign of stomach cancer is pain in the upper or middle abdomen that feels like gas or heartburn. It may be aggravated by eating, so that you feel full when you haven't actually eaten much. What's particularly confusing is that the pain can be relieved by antacids, confirming your conclusion that it was caused by acid in the stomach, when it's more than that. An unexplained pain or ache in lower right side can be the first sign of liver cancer, known as one of the "silent killers." Feeling full after a small meal is a common sign of liver cancer as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have frequent bouts of acid stomach, an unexplained abdominal ache, or a full feeling after meals even when you're eating less than normal, call your doctor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;3&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. Unexplained weight loss If you notice the pounds coming off and you haven't made changes to your diet or exercise regime, it's important to find out why. Unexplained weight loss can be an early sign of colon and other digestive cancers; it can also be a sign of cancer that's spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the ability of your body to rid itself of waste.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;4&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. JaundicePancreatic cancer, another one of the "silent killers," is often discovered when someone notices jaundice and asks the doctor to do a battery of tests. Jaundice is most commonly thought of as a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, but darker-than-normal urine that's not the result of dehydration is also a sign. Clay-colored stools are another little-known sign of jaundice. Oddly, jaundice can also cause itching, because the bile salts in the bloodstream cause the skin to itch. Some people with pancreatic cancer say they noticed the itching before they noticed the jaundice itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;5.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Wheezing or shortness of breathOne of the first signs lung cancer patients remember noticing when they look back is the inability to catch their breath. "I couldn't even walk to my car without wheezing; I thought I had asthma, but how come I didn't have it before?" is how one man described it. Shortness of breath, chest pain, or spitting blood are also signs of testicular cancer that's spread to the lungs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;6&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Chronic cough or chest painSeveral types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. One way to tell the difference: The problems persist, or go away and come back again in a repeating cycle. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;7&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Frequent fevers or infectionsThese can be signs of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. Leukemia causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy white cells, sapping the body's infection-fighting capabilities. Doctors sometimes catch leukemia in older adults only after the patient has been in a number of times complaining of fever, achiness, and flu-like symptoms over an extended period of time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;8.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Difficulty swallowingMost commonly associated with esophageal or throat cancer, having trouble swallowing is sometimes one of the first signs of lung cancer, too. Men diagnosed with esophageal cancer look back and remember a feeling of pressure and soreness when swallowing that didn't go away the way a cold or flu would have. Consult your doctor also if you have a frequent feeling of needing to clear your throat or that food is stuck in your chest; either of these can signal a narrowing of the esophagus that could mean the presence of a tumor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;9&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;. Chronic heartburn If you just ate half a pizza, heartburn is expected. But if you have frequent episodes of heartburn or a constant low-level feeling of pain in the chest after eating, call your doctor and ask to be screened for esophageal cancer. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)—a condition in which stomach acid rises into the esophagus, causing heartburn and an acidic taste in the throat—can trigger a condition called Barrett's esophagus, which can be a precursor of esophageal cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;10&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Swelling of facial featuresSome patients with lung cancer report that they noticed puffiness, swelling, or redness in the face. The explanation for this is that small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest, preventing blood from flowing freely from the head and face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;11&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groinEnlarged lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can be a sign of cancer. For example, a lump or an enlarged lymph node in the neck or underarm is sometimes a sign of thyroid, head, or throat cancer. A painless lump on the neck, underarm, or groin can be an early sign of leukemia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;12.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn't stopThis symptom usually suggests something abnormal happening with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. One man with leukemia noticed that his gums bled when he brushed his teeth; another described bruising in strange places, such as on his fingers and hands. The explanation: Over time, leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells and platelets, impairing the blood's ability to carry oxygen and clot.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;13&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Weakness and fatigue "I had to stop halfway across the yard and sit down when I was mowing the lawn," said one man when describing the fatigue that led to his discovery of pancreatic cancer. Generalized fatigue and weakness is a symptom of so many different kinds of cancer (and other ills) that you'll need to look at it in combination with other symptoms. But any time you feel exhausted without explanation and it doesn't respond to getting more sleep, talk to your doctor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;14&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool"I thought it was hemorrhoids" is one of the most common statements doctors hear when diagnosing colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet alone is reason to call your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy. Another sign of blood in the stool many people miss is stools that are darker in color.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;15&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Bowel problemsConstipation, diarrhea, and changes in stools can all be signs of cancer. As with many other cancer symptoms, the way to tell if this is cause for concern is if it goes on for more than a few days without a clear cause, such as flu or food poisoning. People diagnosed with colon cancer say they noticed more frequent stools, as well as a feeling that their bowels weren't emptying completely. One of the early signs of pancreatic cancer is fatty stools, which can be recognized as frequent, large stools that are paler than normal and smelly. This is a sign that your body's not absorbing your food normally, and it should be brought to your doctor's attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;16.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Difficulty urinating or changes in flowHands-down, the most common early sign of prostate cancer is a feeling of not being able to start peeing once you're set to go. Many men also report having a hard time stopping the flow of urine, a flow that starts and stops, or a stream that's weaker than normal. Any of these symptoms is reason to call your doctor for an exam and a screening test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;17.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Pain or burning during urination This symptom can also indicate a urinary tract infection or sexually transmitted disease, of course, but in any case it warrants an immediate trip to the doctor. This symptom is often combined with the feeling that you need to go more often, particularly at night. These same symptoms can also indicate inflammation or infection in the prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia, the name for what happens when the prostate grows bigger and blocks the flow of urine. However, you need to get checked out to tell the difference.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;18.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Blood in urine or semen Men are often warned about blood in the urine, but they may not realize that blood in semen is also a danger sign for prostate cancer. Blood in the urine or semen isn't always visible as blood; urine may just be a pink, dark red, or smoky brown color, while blood in the semen may just look like a pinkish streak.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;19&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Erection problemsAs prostate cancer progresses, another very common sign is difficulty getting or sustaining an erection. This can be a difficult subject to talk about, but it's important to bring it to your doctor's attention. It could be a sign of sexual dysfunction with another cause, of course, but it's a reason to have an exam and a PSA test.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;20&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Pain, aching, or heaviness in the groin, hips, thighs, or abdomen One sign of prostate cancer is frequent pain in the hips, upper thighs, or the lowest part of the back. Men with testicular cancer report noticing a heavy, aching feeling low in the belly or abdomen, or in the scrotum or testicles themselves. They sometimes describe it as a feeling of downward pulling or as a generalized ache throughout the groin area. Prostate cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes often makes itself known as discomfort in the pelvis or swelling in the legs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;21.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Testicular swelling or lumpThe lumps that indicate testicular cancer are nearly always painless. It's also common for a testicle to be enlarged or swollen, but lacking any specific lump that you can see or feel. Some men report feeling discomfort from the enlargement, but not an outright pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;22.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Unexplained back painBack pain can mean all sorts of things, of course—most often pulled muscles or disc problems. But unexplained, persistent back pain can be an early sign of cancer as well, so get it checked out. Pain in the lower back and hips can be a sign of prostate cancer, while pain in the upper back can signal lung cancer. A pain in the upper abdomen and back is one of the few early signs of pancreatic cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;23&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Scaly or painful nipple or chest, nipple dischargeMen do get breast cancer; they also get a condition called gynecomastia, which is a benign lump in the breast area. Breast cancer is usually detected as a lump, but if it's spreading inward it can also cause chest pain. Other signs of breast cancer include patches of red, scaly, or dimpled skin or changes to the nipple such as turning inward or leaking fluid. Bring any lump, swelling, or skin or nipple problem, or any chest pain, to your doctor's attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;24&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. A sore or skin lump that doesn't heal, becomes crusty, or bleeds easilyMost of us know to watch moles for changes that might indicate skin cancer. But other signs, such as small waxy lumps or dry scaly patches, are easier to miss. Familiarize yourself with the different types of skin cancer—melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma—and be vigilant about checking skin all over the body for odd-looking growths or spots.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;25&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;. Changes in nails Unexplained changes to the fingernails can be a sign of several types of cancer. It was discovered that not only that the tumour did not increase in size, on the contrary it showed signs of shrinking, and surprised the hospital staff conducting the check-up as a miracle. Five years later, the tumour had shrunk to such a state as to almost disappear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;每天又吃綠藻、喝菱角湯，樂觀加上每天適當的運動，一年後再到同一公立醫院檢查結果，發現腫瘤不但沒有長大、反而已呈現萎縮狀態，遂令醫院檢查人員驚為奇蹟，五年後竟完全處於萎縮、至近於消失狀態。&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After almost 40 years, presently Mr Zhang's health is totally normal, and living a very pleasant life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;經過了將近四十年歲月，現在張先生的健康情況完全正常，生活起居甚為愉快。&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Following Mr Zhang, a Mr Chen Tianshou, who was previously Head of the General Administration of the Taidong Provincial Hospital, was similarly diagnosed with lung cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;繼張先生之後，有位前台東省立醫院總務課長陳添壽先生，同樣得到肺癌；&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When Mr Wei heard of this, he told Mr Chen of the experience of Mr Zhang, and Mr Chen started to follow the instructions of Dr Lu to change his physical condition. It turned out that their doctors had sent them. 'They had been told to drink eight glasses of hot water with fresh lemon grass steeped in it on the days that they went for their radiation and chemotherapy treatments,' Zabidov told ISRAEL21c. 'And this is the place you go to in Israel for fresh lemon grass.' &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It all began when researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov Weinstein, incumbent of the Albert Katz Chair in Cell-Differentiation and Malignant Diseases, from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at BGU. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YFROjnhNBfg/SYKA0DuCjjI/AAAAAAAABM8/u4g_Nur6ZWA/s1600-h/ATT01196.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296937743581089330" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 384px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 326px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YFROjnhNBfg/SYKA0DuCjjI/AAAAAAAABM8/u4g_Nur6ZWA/s400/ATT01196.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis.) &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;According to Ofir, the study found that citral causes cancer cells to 'commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed cell death.' A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the popular Israeli press. Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists have a theory. 'In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide with no control and become cancer cells. In normal cells, when the cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly - for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic material following cell division - it triggers cell death,' explains Weinstein. 'This research may explain the medical benefit of these herbs.' &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against certain cancerous cells. As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties of citral. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;That's why Zabidov's farm - the only major grower of fresh lemon grass in Israel - has become a pilgrimage destination for these patients. Luckily, they found themselves in sympathetic hands. Zabidov greets visitors with a large kettle of aromatic lemon grass tea, a plate of cookies, and a supportive attitude. 'My father died of cancer, and my wife's sister died young because of cancer,' said Zabidov. 'So I understand what they are dealing with. And I may not know anything about medicine, but I'm a good listener. And so they tell me about their expensive painful treatments and what they've been through. I would never tell them to stop being treated, but it's great that they are exploring alternatives and drinking the lemon grass tea as well.' &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Zabidov knew from a young age that agriculture was his calling. At age 14, he enrolled in the Kfar Hayarok Agricultural high school. After his army service, he joined an idealistic group which headed south, in the Arava desert region, to found a new moshav (agricultural settlement) called Tsofar. 'We were very successful; we raised fruits and vegetables, and,' he notes with a smile, 'We raised some very nice children.' On a trip to Europe in the mid-80s, he began to become interested in herbs. Israel, at the time, was nothing like the trend-conscious cuisine-oriented country it is today, and the only spices being grown commercially were basics like parsley, dill, and coriander. Wandering in the Paris market, looking at the variety of herbs and spices, Zabidov realized that there was a great export potential in this niche. He brought samples back home with him, 'which was technically illegal,' he says with a guilty smile, to see how they would grow in his desert greenhouses. Soon, he was growing basil, oregano, tarragon, chives, sage, marjoram and melissa, and mint just to name a few. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;His business began to outgrow his desert facilities, and so he decided to move north, settling in the moshav of Kfar Yedidya, an hour and a half north of Tel Aviv. He is now selling 'several hundred kilos' of lemon grass per week, and has signed with a distributor to package and put it in health food stores. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. It's all written in your hands&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dry skin and chipped fingernails are not the only reason to pay attention to your hands. For new research shows they contain vital details about our health, including clues to hidden diseases such as cancer.&lt;br /&gt;The palm of a woman's hand could be an early warning sign of an ovarian tumour, according to a report in the latest Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A 74-year-old woman who was otherwise healthy sought medical help for hard lumps that developed on her palms. These had gradually spread and joined together, giving the palm a 'wooden' feeling, making movement difficult and painful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Research suggests your hands contain vital details about your health, including clues to hidden diseases, such as cancer&lt;br /&gt;Doctors couldn't find anything obviously wrong, but she was tested for - and diagnosed with - ovarian cancer after they read medical literature and found that the lumps (called palmar fasciitis)were a rare sign of the disease&lt;br /&gt;Why a tumour has this effect on hands remains a mystery. But one theory is cancer cells pump out chemicals that trigger fibrosis, or scarring of tissue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GP and author Dr Graham Easton, who has a special interest in hands, says they can provide essential clues on a patient's well-being.&lt;br /&gt;'I always try to shake hands when I meet a patient for the first time,' says Dr Easton, a family doctor in London . 'I'm not being polite - their hands are packed with information about their general health, from whether they might have a thyroid problem to signs of osteoarthritis.&lt;br /&gt;'In fact, doctors can often tell more about someone's health by their hands than their face.'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, what are the hand signals you should look for to keep a check on your health?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;REDDENED PALMS &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Liver cirrhosis&lt;br /&gt;The hands can tell doctors a lot about the state of your liver. One of the classic signs of diseases such cirrhosis is a reddening of the palms.&lt;br /&gt;Cirrhosis means heavy scarring of liver tissue, and although it is associated mostly with heavy drinking, it can also be caused by other 'silent'conditions, such as hepatitis C.&lt;br /&gt;Called palmar erythema, this reddening usually affects the outer edge of the palm, near the little finger. Blood vessels in the skin dilate due to changes in the hormone balance caused by liver disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;FATTY KNUCKLES&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: High cholesterol&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lumps of cholesterol deposits - known as tendon xanthoma - over the knuckles are one of the signs of a potentially fatal condition called familialhypercholesterolaemia.&lt;br /&gt;These are hard, yellowy bumps that protrude when you clench your fist.&lt;br /&gt;'Fatty deposits build up for years in the tendons and eventually become fibrous and hard,' says Ellen Mason, cardiac nurse with the British Heart&lt;br /&gt;Foundation.&lt;br /&gt;People with the condition have extremely high cholesterol levels from birth but no obvious symptoms and, without drug treatment, can die from a heart attack at a young age.&lt;br /&gt;Around one in 500 people in the UK are affected, and it is estimated that there are around 100,000 who have not yet been diagnosed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SPOON NAILS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Anaemia&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of us have nails that are convex, which means they curve like the surface of a ball. But if your nails have a dip in the middle, it could be a sign of iron deficiency.&lt;br /&gt;Doctors call this condition koilonychia, or spoon nails, and it is one of the first things they look for when trying to work out if a tired and listless patient is suffering from anaemia and needs to take iron supplements.&lt;br /&gt;It's thought the lack of iron weakens the nail and makes it thinner until, eventually, it partially collapses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;CLUB FINGERS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Lung cancer&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the tips of your fingers are dome-shaped or look like small clubs, it could be a warning sign of serious diseases such as lung cancer, TB ormesothelioma - a deadly lung disease linked to asbestos.&lt;br /&gt;Although the characteristic was first identified by Hippocrates more than 2,000 years ago, it was only recently that scientists at the University of Leeds discovered why it happens.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's due to the build-up of a substance called PGE2 which helps dampen down inflammation in the lungs. It's thought lung tumours send production of PGE2 into overdrive, churning out ten times the amount the body needs. It builds up in the finger tips and causes swelling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BLUE FINGERNAILS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Heart failure&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the easiest ways for doctors to check how much oxygen is circulating in the blood is to check the nails, toes or lips.&lt;br /&gt;Pink means a healthy circulation, but blue suggests the body is low on oxygen because blood is not being pumped round the body properly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Called cyanosis, this condition can be a warning sign for heart failure.&lt;br /&gt;Oxygen-poor blood is not actually blue. It just appears less bright through the nails than red oxygen-rich blood.&lt;br /&gt;Women about to have surgery are always asked to remove their nail varnish so surgeons can check their oxygen status quickly during the procedure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BEADED NAILS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Rheumatoid arthritis&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have tiny beads on your nails that resemble candle wax dripping downwards, it could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis, even if your joints have not become swollen or painful.&lt;br /&gt;Doctors called this 'beading' of the nails; the more fingers or toes affected, the more likely it is that arthritis has set in. The cause is thought to be vasculitis, inflammation of the blood vessels under the nail bed, triggered by the arthritis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BONY LUMPS ON FINGERS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Osteoarthritis in the hips&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bonypea-sized lumps that are painful to the touch around the joints of the fingers can be a marker for osteoarthritis elsewhere in the body, such as hips or knees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These lumps are known as Heberden's nodes, first noted by prominent 18th-century English doctor called William Heberden.&lt;br /&gt;Onestudy in the Seventies showed that out of 29 patients with previously un diagnosed arthritis of the hip, 18 had Heberden's nodes on their finger joints.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;TWO-TONE NAILS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Kidney disease&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nails that are a pale white on the bottom half, nearest the skin, but a brownish shade on the top half, could be a sign of kidney failure.&lt;br /&gt;The condition, known as half-and-half nails, can often develop before the patient's organ starts to pack up, giving doctors a vital clue as to what's likely to happen.&lt;br /&gt;It's thought to be due to a build up of urea - a waste product normally processed by the kidneys but which here crystallises under the skin and nails.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SWEATY PALMS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: Overactive thyroid&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hyperthyroidism- or over active thyroid - is a common condition that, for reasons which remain unclear, affects more women than men.&lt;br /&gt;The thyroid is a gland that sits just below the Adam's apple and produces a hormone that controls the body's metabolism - the rate at which it produces energy.&lt;br /&gt;A key sign is hot and sweaty palms, says Dr Susan Clarke, consultant physician at King's College Hospital , London ...&lt;br /&gt;'With an overactive thyroid, the body uses up more calories and generates more heat. Feeling hot and sweaty all the time is a classic symptom.'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;OVERSIZED HANDS&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could mean: A pituitary tumour&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your hands become swollen and enlarged, you could be developing a condition called acromegaly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The feet, lips, nose and ears can also be affected as the pituitary gland - which sits in the brain - pumps out too much growth hormone, usually because it has developed a non-cancerous tumour that upsets hormone production. This is interesting. . .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people ! to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Read on to the end...gets very interesting!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both have the same amount of calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.&lt;br /&gt;Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few&lt;br /&gt;only because they are added!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..&lt;br /&gt;This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can try this yourself:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? In fact I have already reduced my medicine. Take two pieces of Lady Finger (Bhindi) and remove/cut both ends of each piece. Also put a small cut in the middle and put these two pieces in glass of water. Cover the glass and keep it at room temperature during night. Early morning, before breakfast simply remove two pieces of lady finger (bhindi) from the glass and drink that water.Keep doing it on daily basis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Within two weeks, you will see remarkable results in reduction of your SUGAR.&lt;br /&gt;My sister has got rid of her diabetes. In this way it helps&lt;br /&gt;prevent haemorrhoids and colon cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The propionic acid and beta glucan from barley's insoluble fibre also help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of gallstones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eating barley regularly is a preventive step against heart disease as,&lt;br /&gt;besides the fibre content, it is also high in niacin, a B vitamin good for&lt;br /&gt;lowering cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Diabetics should eat more barley as the fibre will prevent blood sugar&lt;br /&gt;levels from rising too high. The larger pearl barley is used and I love the sticky bite of it.&lt;br /&gt;Here's a recipe for barley soup:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Barley soup with roasted garlic&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 cup pearl barley&lt;br /&gt;5 cloves whole garlic, roasted&lt;br /&gt;2 litres chicken stock, steeped from 1 chicken breast simmered in three litres water&lt;br /&gt;2 tbsps vegetable oil&lt;br /&gt;2 large onions, diced&lt;br /&gt;2 carrots, diced&lt;br /&gt;2 stalks celery, diced&lt;br /&gt;150g turkey ham, cut up&lt;br /&gt;1 tsp ground white pepper&lt;br /&gt;1 tsps sea salt or to taste&lt;br /&gt;1 tbsp chopped parsley&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Method&lt;br /&gt;1. Wash barley and soak it in a bowl of water for three hours. Drain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Heat oil in pan and fry onions. Add carrots and celery, then the barley and fry for three minutes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Add chicken stock, pepper and roasted garlic and simmer over low heat for at least an hour, or until barley is soft.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. This is believed to be due to curcumin, the pigment that gives turmeric its bright hue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Regular consumption of nuts and seeds may also help prevent decline in mental functions associated with ageing. Fat-soluble components such as tocopherols and tocotrienols in nuts and seeds are much sought-after nutrients to boost mental health. Palm oil is the only cooking oil rich in vitamin E – therefore, its use is encouraged.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are numerous plant phytonutrients that provide the immune system with antioxidants as well as improve blood circulation and nervous system function. The findings offer yet more incentive for people to opt for whole grains over highly processed versions, according to the researchers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Researchers from Pennsylvania State University reported the findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In general, experts recommend eating whole grains – such as oatmeal, brown rice and barley – rather than refined grains, like white bread and other products made from white flour. Whole grain foods retain more of the nutrients and fibre components of the grain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This fact might explain why dieters in the current study showed added benefits when they ate whole grains, according to the researchers. For example, fibre-rich foods may have kept participants’ blood sugar levels more stable throughout the day, and this, in turn, may have lowered their CRP levels. Alternatively, CRP might have dropped because of the antioxidant nutrients that are present in whole grains but depleted in refined ones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The study included 50 obese men and women who had metabolic syndrome, a collection of several risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and stroke – such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of the study participants cut calories for 12 weeks, but half were instructed to strive for whole grains, while the rest were told to choose refined grains. The whole grain group was told to look for products with “whole grain” listed as the first ingredient on the label.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the end, the average weight loss was about 3.6kg to 5kg in both groups. However, the average CRP level dropped by 38% in the whole grain group, while remaining unchanged in the refined grain group. In addition, while both groups showed a similar change in waistline size, the whole grain dieters showed a greater reduction in the percentage of fat around the middle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The researchers recommend that consumers look at labels and take care to choose products that are good sources of whole grain. They said many foods claimed to contain whole grains but do not.
